3D Sensing Technologies
3D sensing can be achieved using a number of different technologies. Each of these technologies has its common use cases and individual strengths. Jabil Optics has the ability to design, develop and deploy 3D sensing hardware based on any one of these three technologies, either using an existing platform or designing the modules individually from scratch.
Stereoscopic Vision
This technology is inspired by how the human eyes capture images. Two cameras are placed at slightly offset positions (just like human eyes). The two captured images are then united into one picture. The small differences resulting from the different camera positions create the stereoscopic, i.e. 3D picture. Assisted stereoscopic vision uses the additional help of a laser projection module projecting dots on the object or scene to help the camera focus more easily.
Structured Light Pattern
A light pattern made up of either lines, squares (periodic structures) or dots is projected onto an object or a scene by a laser projection module. A camera mounted triangularly to the projection module then captures the reflected light. The pattern distortion achieved by the triangulation between projection and camera module serves to acquire the 3D coordinates of the object or scene.
Time of Flight
A light pattern made up of either lines, squares (periodic structures) or dots is projected onto an object or a scene by a laser projection module. A camera mounted triangularly to the projection module then captures the reflected light. The pattern distortion achieved by the triangulation between projection and camera module serves to acquire the 3D coordinates of the object or scene.
